Almost no casino page explains RTP, even though the term shows up on every one of them.

What RTP actually means

It is the game’s mathematics that RTP describes; a session is not promised anything. For a game with a 96% RTP, 96 units for every 100 wagered is the design return, and it applies over millions of spins, not hundreds. The remaining 4 is the house edge. When the game is built, the studio sets it; the casino offering that game cannot, on most titles, alter it.

The common misreading

The mistaken idea is that a player gets back 96% of their money on an evening when the RTP is 96%. It does not. Short sessions come down to variance; the long-run average only makes itself felt across more play than an individual ever gets. It is quite possible to lose the whole stake on a 98% game and finish ahead on a 94% one, which says nothing about the accuracy of the figures.

There is no promise in RTP, no payout schedule, and no indication of how often a game pays. One game reaches 96% with rare enormous wins, another reaches 96% with constant small ones, and although they are rated identically they feel nothing alike. It is volatility that the second property refers to, and the figure for it is separate.

Using it in practice

Stack games against each other on RTP; your own results are not the yardstick. In a catalogue, a one-point RTP difference is meaningful; in a session, nobody could see it. And find out if the figure has a source; if a studio lists RTP on its own game pages, quote it; if it is just repeated between comparison sites and has no primary source, leave it. Since one clause usually carries all of them, it reads better alongside what house edge means and what volatility means.

A worked example

The arithmetic is worth doing once. On a 96% RTP game, 500 spins at ₱10 add up to ₱5,000 of turnover, and the expected ₱4,800 return implies an expected loss of ₱200. Then again, 500 spins is a tiny sample, so the real result will stray widely from that figure, especially on a high-volatility game. Expectation points to the centre of a range of outcomes without predicting any of them.
